Most of the households have a RO Water Purifier. For every 1 litre of purified water – 3 litres of water is wasted!
For an average household, that consumes 15 litres per day – 45 litres of water is rejected (equivalent to 2-3 buckets)!
What does a Water Purifier do?
The Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane filters out the dissolved solutes (such as ions, pesticides, micro-organisms and other chemicals) from water.
Water contains a mix of salts like Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium etc. These salts need to be at an optimum level for safe drinking purposes as per the WHO standard (TDS : Total Dissolved Solids):
After purifying and maintaining the TDS in the drinking water, the remaining water is rejected by the RO Membrane.
However, this rejected water can be utilised for various purposes after verifying the following parameters with the Water Purifier technicians:
- TDS of the rejected water (preferably less than 900mg/L)
- Presence of dangerous chemicals like Arsenic, Sodium etc
Key tips to use / reduce RO rejected water:
- When your vessels are accumulated in the Kitchen sink, switch on the Water Purifier and make sure the rejected water fills these vessels. This keeps it moist for easy washing and doesn’t go for waste (unlike the tap water)
- Divert the water to all plants (except vegetables) such as flowers, crotons etc
