Day 3 : Morning

Got up early and we were super-excited to meet ‘Elephas Maximus Indicus‘. Now, what is that??

It is our ‘Indian Elephants’ at Dubare Elephant Camp. Located at the foothills of Coorg (near Kushal Nagar) and along the banks of the River Cauvery. (Check out the timings)

To reach the camp (located on the opposite bank), we used the motor boat service. This is one place where we get an opportunity to interact with elephants through these activities:

Bathing:

These friendly elephants are pampered and we get to bathe them. The beauty of these animals is that if we bathe them well – they return the favour!

Elephants bathing us!

Feeding:

After having an excellent bath in the river, they are taken to open ground – where we can feed them rice-bundled in hay (supposedly their favourite and they eat more than a kilo of it!)

These elephants are famous for another reason. These majestic mammals are the highlight of Mysore’s Dasara (Dussehra) procession!

Day 3 : Afternoon

During rainy season, there are 2 types of rafting available:

  1. Still-water – When the river flow is minimal
  2. White-water – When the river is turbulent

When we visited, it was the start of the rainy season and hence, we experienced Still-water rafting (30-45 mins). The guides who accompanied us were very friendly and skilled.

After rafting, we returned to our estate and were fully dressed (to avoid leech bites) for the Coffee and pepper plantation visit. It was an amazing trek and learnt how Robusta, Arabiaca and Pepper were grown.

Other major attractions within Madikeri:

  1. Abbey Falls
  2. Omkareshwara Temple
  3. Madikeri Fort

Day 3 : Night

Rest for the day at the estate. Day 4 at Club Mahindra (Coorg) for some adrenaline-rush activities!
